• Which Massage Course Should You Choose in Kyoto? A Visitor’s Guide to Body Massage, Dry Head Spa and Korugi

    2026年10月1日

Short answer: if your legs and back ache after a day of temple-hopping, choose the body massage. If your head feels wired, your eyes are tired and you cannot fall asleep at a normal Japanese hour because of jet lag, choose the dry head spa. If your face feels heavy and puffy and you have photos to take tomorrow, choose korugi with the plaster pack. Those three lines cover most travellers who walk through our door.

The second question is usually “how long, and when?” Book your session for the evening of a heavy walking day rather than the morning after, and give yourself a longer slot if more than one area of your body is complaining. THE BODY KYOTO is open 10:30–22:00 with last reception at 21:00, so a session still fits after dinner in Gion or an evening stroll around Yasaka Shrine. Current durations and prices are listed on the web reservation page — check there before you plan your timing, and note that closing days are irregular.

Start here: match the course to what is actually tired

Most visitors arrive saying “I’m just tired,” but the body is rarely tired all over in the same way. Use this as a starting point, then tell your therapist which line describes you best.

How you feel Typical cause on a Kyoto trip Course to consider
Heavy, swollen legs; sore calves and feet 15,000–25,000 steps a day, stone paths and temple steps Body massage (ask for extra time on legs)
Stiff shoulders and neck, tight upper back Backpack, camera, long-haul flight posture Body massage
Head feels full, eyes strained, mind will not switch off Jet lag, screen time for maps and translation Dry head spa
Face looks puffy, jawline feels tight Flight cabin air, salt-heavy travel meals, poor sleep Korugi × plaster pack
All of the above Day 3 or 4 of a packed itinerary Longer body session, or ask about combining areas

Body massage or dry head spa? A simple Kyoto massage decision guide

If jet lag is the main problem

A dry head spa is a head, scalp, neck and shoulder treatment performed without water, shampoo or hair-washing, so you leave with dry hair and can walk straight back out into the city. At THE BODY KYOTO the pressure is applied in time with your breathing rather than forced, which is why many guests find it a good fit when they feel over-stimulated rather than physically sore — the classic state after crossing several time zones. It is not a sleep remedy, and how you feel afterwards differs from person to person, but a quiet, dim room at 20:00 local time is a reasonable way to help your body accept that the day is ending.

If walking is the main problem

Our body massage is based on Japanese shiatsu-style finger pressure and point work, supervised by nationally licensed practitioners. Rather than strong, aggressive pushing, the pressure sinks in gradually as you exhale, working through the neck, shoulders, back and down to the legs. If your calves and the soles of your feet are the problem, say so at the start; time spent on the lower body is the single most useful adjustment for sightseeing fatigue.

    How long should you book?

As a rough guide when you look at the available durations:

    • One clear complaint (legs only, or shoulders only): the shortest available slot is usually enough.
    • Two areas (shoulders and legs, or body and head): choose a longer slot, otherwise the session becomes a tour rather than a treatment.
    • Last night of a long trip: go longer than you think you need. This is the day your body has accumulated the most.
    • Add-on planning: allow buffer time before your slot — arriving rushed and out of breath undoes part of the point.

Korugi with plaster pack: who it suits

Korugi is a facial and head technique that applies gentle but deep pressure to the facial muscles and lymphatic areas to ease tension around the cheeks, jaw and temples. At THE BODY KYOTO it is finished with a plaster (gypsum) pack that warms and wraps the skin while adding moisture. Travellers tend to book it before a kimono-wearing day, a photo session in Higashiyama, or a wedding or dinner they have flown in for. Results vary by individual and by day, and this is a relaxation menu rather than a medical or permanent bone-changing procedure — if you are looking for structural change, this is not it. If you want to feel less heavy around the face and take an hour of stillness, it is.

Booking a massage in Gion as an overseas visitor: what to confirm first

Portal sites rarely answer the questions travellers actually have. Here is what we recommend clarifying before you arrive — the fastest route is the web reservation page, a phone call to 075-276-0409, or a message on Instagram.

    1. Language: ask in advance whether English support is available on your preferred date and time, and write your main concern (“tired legs”, “can’t sleep”) in your booking note. A translation app on your phone is a sensible backup.
    2. Tattoos: policies differ from business to business in Japan, so ask directly rather than assuming.
    3. Payment: confirm accepted methods, including overseas cards or IC payment, when you book.
    4. Tipping: tipping is not customary in Japan. The listed price is the price you pay.
    5. Clothing: you do not need to bring anything special; ask about what you change into and how much clothing stays on if you would like to know in advance.
    6. Luggage: if you are coming straight from a station with a suitcase, ask whether it can be brought into the room.
    7. Running late: message or call as soon as you know. Trains and buses in Kyoto are punctual, but Gion traffic on a spring or autumn weekend is not.

    Fitting it into your itinerary

The salon sits in Higashiyama-ku, Tominaga-cho, on the 4th floor — within the Shijo-Kawaramachi and Gion area, so it slots naturally into the end of a Kiyomizu-dera → Sannenzaka → Yasaka Shrine → Gion walking day. Two realistic patterns:

    • Dinner first, then relax: finish your meal by 20:00 and take a slot before the 21:00 last reception. Good if you want to go straight back to the hotel and sleep.
    • Relax first, then dinner: a late-afternoon slot after sightseeing, then Pontocho or Kawaramachi for dinner. Good if you are still adjusting to jet lag and do not want to nap too early.

Whichever course you choose, tell us at the start what hurt most today. That one sentence changes the session more than any menu name. Please note that how you feel after a treatment differs from person to person, and if you have a medical condition, are pregnant, or are unsure whether a session is suitable for you, consult a doctor first and let us know when you book.

    よくある質問

Do I need a reservation, or can I walk in on the day?

Booking ahead is the safer choice, especially for evening slots in the Gion and Shijo-Kawaramachi area. Use the web reservation page, call 075-276-0409, or send an Instagram message. Same-day availability depends on the day, so check first rather than walking up to the 4th floor and hoping.

Can I have a body massage and a dry head spa on the same visit?

Ask when you book. Combining body and head work generally needs a longer total time slot, so check the current course list and durations on the web reservation page and mention in your booking note that you would like both areas addressed. If time is limited, prioritise whichever is bothering you more today.

What should I tell the therapist if my Japanese is limited?

Three short pieces of information are enough: the body part that hurts most, how strong you want the pressure, and anything to avoid (injury, recent surgery, pregnancy, skin sensitivity). Write them in your booking note in advance, or show them on a translation app at the start of the session.
